When a parent's care spans several doctors, the family often ends up coordinating it all. Here's how a concierge doctor can take on that load in Palm Beach County.

The call usually comes at a bad time. A parent has had a fall, a new prescription that doesn’t sit right, or a hospital stay that ended with a stack of discharge papers nobody quite understands. If you are the adult child who lives closest, or the one everyone calls, you quickly learn that coordinating an older parent’s medical care can feel like a second job. That is why more families in Palm Beach County are asking whether a concierge doctor could carry some of that weight.
In brief
- A concierge doctor gives your parent one physician who knows their full history and can be reached by call, text or video 24/7.
- With your parent’s permission, the doctor’s office can keep you informed, so you are not chasing updates.
- Look for same-building testing, specialist coordination and house calls if getting out of the house is hard.
Why caring for an aging parent gets complicated so fast
Most older adults don’t have one health issue. They have several, and each one tends to come with its own specialist, its own medications and its own follow-up schedule. Blood pressure, diabetes, heart rhythm, joints, memory, eyesight: before long there are five or six offices involved, and no one is looking at the whole picture.
The family member who steps in ends up doing the connecting. You keep the medication list. You repeat the history at every new appointment. You call to find out whether test results came back. You try to remember which doctor said what. None of that is medical care, but all of it affects whether your parent gets good care.
What a concierge doctor actually does for an older patient
Concierge medicine is primary care with more access and more time. Your parent becomes a member of a practice and, in return, gets a doctor they can reach directly and visits that are not rushed. If you want the basics first, our guide to how concierge medicine works covers them.
For an aging parent, the differences that matter most tend to be these:
- One doctor who knows the whole story. The same physician sees your parent each time, keeps one up-to-date medication list and reviews results from every specialist.
- Direct access, any hour. At Wave, members can call, text or video their own doctor 24/7, weekends included. That matters when a question comes up on a Saturday night.
- Same or next day visits. No waiting weeks for a new symptom to be checked, and no long waiting room once you arrive.
- Unhurried appointments. There is time to go through every concern, every medication and every question you wrote down.

Staying in the loop without becoming the switchboard
One of the most common worries adult children have is simply not knowing what is going on. Your parent comes home from an appointment and can’t quite remember what the doctor said, or doesn’t want to worry you.
With your parent’s permission, a concierge practice can keep family members informed. That might mean you join a visit by video, get a call after a test result comes back, or have a direct line to ask a question. Your parent stays in charge of their own care, and you stop guessing.
The usual way vs. with your own doctor
The usual way: Your mother in Delray Beach mentions she has felt dizzy for a few days. You call her regular office and get the next available appointment, which is two weeks out. Meanwhile, you wonder whether it is her new blood pressure pill, and nobody can tell you.
With your own doctor: You or your mother text her doctor that afternoon. The doctor, who already knows her medication list, asks a few questions and sees her the same or next day. If she needs blood work or an EKG, it can be done in the same building during that visit.
Testing and specialists under one roof
Every extra trip is harder for an older adult, and for the person driving them. An imaging center across town, a lab somewhere else and results faxed between offices can stretch a simple question into weeks.
At Wave, MRI, X-ray, ultrasound, labs and EKG are in the same building, and blood work is drawn right in the office. CT scans are done on location, often the same day, with expedited results. Cardiology is on location too, including stress tests, and there is a full physical therapy center on site, which helps after a fall or a joint replacement.
When a specialist is needed, we normally get your parent in the same day. Records are sent ahead, and the results are reviewed with your parent afterwards. A dedicated concierge liaison handles the booking and the paperwork, which is exactly the part that tends to land on family. You can read more about how care coordination works.
The usual way vs. with your own doctor
The usual way: Your father in Boca Raton is referred to a cardiologist. You spend a morning on hold, get an appointment weeks away, and arrive to find the specialist doesn’t have his recent tests.
With your own doctor: The referral is booked for him, usually the same day, his records go ahead, and his own doctor goes over the specialist’s findings with him afterwards so nothing gets lost.
When getting out of the house is hard
Some parents can still drive themselves to appointments. Others can’t, or shouldn’t, and every visit means someone taking time off work. For those families, house calls can make a real difference.
Wave’s Executive plan adds house calls, including blood draws at home, along with weekend urgent care visits in the office.
If your parent ends up in the hospital
A hospital stay is often the most stressful moment for a family. When admission is needed, Wave can arrange direct admission to Delray Medical Center when possible, skipping the emergency room, and your parent’s own doctor stays involved throughout. That continuity helps at discharge too, when new medications and follow-up plans need to be sorted out.
Questions to ask before choosing a concierge doctor for a parent
Sit down with your parent and go through these together. It helps to bring them to a consultation, too.
- How do we reach the doctor after hours and on weekends, and who answers?
- Can family members be kept informed, and how is that set up?
- Which tests can be done on site, and how quickly are results shared?
- How are specialist referrals handled, and who does the scheduling?
- Are house calls available if mobility becomes a problem?
- What happens if my parent needs to be admitted to a hospital?
- Does the practice accept Medicare and my parent’s insurance?

What it costs, and how Medicare fits in
Wave accepts Medicare and most insurance. Covered medical care is billed to Medicare or insurance as usual. The membership fee is separate and covers the concierge service: the access, the time and the coordination.
There are two plans. Concierge is $2,500 per member, billed every 6 months. Executive is $7,500 per member, billed every 6 months, and adds house calls and blood draws at home. Couples get discounts, which is worth knowing if both parents would join. An annual concierge physical and a yearly IV infusion and facial are included. You can compare the details on our membership plans page.
