You spend the winter in Palm Beach County, but your doctor is a thousand miles away. Here's how seasonal residents stay covered, and why many choose a local concierge doctor.

Every fall, the license plates on Jog Road and Atlantic Avenue start to change. Seasonal residents return to Boynton Beach, Delray Beach, Boca Raton and Palm Beach for the winter, and many of them bring the same quiet worry: their doctor, their records and their prescriptions are all back home, a thousand miles away. When a sinus infection, a fall on the tennis court or a blood pressure reading that looks off shows up in January, the question is simple. Who do you call here?
In brief
- Seasonal residents often go months without a doctor who knows them, which can mean urgent care visits and gaps in care.
- A local concierge doctor gives you a direct line to your own physician while you are in Palm Beach County, plus coordination with your doctor up north.
- Before you head south, check how your insurance or Medicare plan works in Florida and bring an up-to-date medication list.
The snowbird health gap
Splitting the year between two homes is one of the joys of retirement, or of a flexible career. But medical care is usually built around one address. Your primary care doctor, your specialists and your pharmacy are all set up for the months you live up north. For the rest of the year, you are a visitor.
That gap tends to show up in a few predictable ways:
- Small problems turn into waiting rooms. A urinary tract infection or a bad cough means an urgent care or walk-in clinic, where no one has your history.
- Chronic conditions drift. Blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes and thyroid levels still need checking, and four or five months without labs is a long time.
- Specialist follow-ups get pushed. A cardiology or orthopedic check that should happen in February often waits until you are back home in May.
- Records live in two places. Test results from Florida may never reach your doctor up north, and the reverse is just as common.
None of this is dramatic on its own. Together, it means many seasonal residents spend a third or more of the year without a doctor who actually knows them.
What a concierge doctor changes for seasonal residents
Concierge medicine is built around access. Instead of competing for a short appointment slot, you have a relationship with your own physician and a direct way to reach them. If the idea is new to you, our guide to how concierge medicine works covers the basics.
For snowbirds, a few features matter most:
One number to call, any time
At Wave Concierge Medicine in Boynton Beach, members can call, text or video their own doctor 24/7, weekends included. When something comes up on a Saturday night, you are not guessing which clinic is open.
Same or next day visits
Visits are unhurried, and you are seen when you arrive. That makes it realistic to deal with a problem while it is still small.
Testing under one roof
MRI, X-ray, ultrasound, labs and EKG are in the same building, and blood work is drawn right in the office. CT scans are available on location, often the same day, with expedited results. For someone who only has a few months in Florida, not having to drive across the county for each test makes a real difference. You can read more about our on-site diagnostics.

Two real-life examples
A sudden earache in January
The usual way: You look up the nearest walk-in clinic, wait, explain your history to someone new, and leave with a prescription sent to a pharmacy you have never used. Your doctor up north never hears about it.
With your own doctor: You text your doctor in the morning and are seen the same or next day. The prescription goes to your nearest pharmacy, your single medication list is updated, and the visit notes can be shared with your home doctor if you would like.
A worrying heart flutter
The usual way: You wait to see if it happens again, then try to book a cardiologist with no openings for weeks, or put it off until you are home.
With your own doctor: Your doctor sees you, an EKG is done in the same building, and if a cardiology look is needed, cardiology is on location, including stress tests. For other specialists, the concierge liaison normally gets you in the same day, with your records sent ahead and results reviewed with you afterward. Our specialist referrals page explains how that works.
One important note: chest pain, trouble breathing, signs of a stroke or any other emergency means calling 911 right away, wherever you are.
Insurance and Medicare: what to check before you come south
Coverage is often the first thing seasonal residents ask about, and it is worth sorting out before you arrive.
- Original Medicare is accepted by participating providers across the country, so it generally travels with you.
- Medicare Advantage and many private plans use provider networks that can be tied to where you live. Some cover only emergency and urgent care outside the home area. Call your plan and ask how care in Florida is handled.
- Medigap and supplemental plans vary, so confirm the details for your own policy.
Wave accepts Medicare and most insurance. Covered medical care is billed to Medicare or your insurance, and the membership fee is separate and covers the concierge service. The Concierge plan is $2,500 per member, billed every 6 months, and the Executive plan is $7,500 per member, billed every 6 months, which adds house calls and blood draws at home. Couples and families get discounts. You can compare them on our membership plans page, and our earlier article on whether Medicare covers concierge medicine goes into more detail.
A snowbird health checklist
Whether or not you join a concierge practice, a little preparation keeps the season smooth:
- Bring a current medication list, including doses and the prescribing doctor, plus any allergies.
- Ask about prescription timing. Talk with your doctor and pharmacy about refills while you are away so you do not run short.
- Carry key records, such as recent lab results, imaging reports, an EKG if you have one, and a list of past surgeries.
- Sign records releases so your Florida and northern doctors can share information.
- Plan your labs. If you are due for blood work or a follow-up scan, schedule it for the Florida months instead of waiting.
- Decide who should be kept informed. With your permission, family members can be updated if you are ill while away from home.
Keeping both doctors on the same page
A Florida doctor does not have to replace the physician you have trusted for years. Many seasonal residents keep both. The key is coordination: one up-to-date medication list, records that move in both directions, and a clear plan for who follows which condition. Wave’s care coordination is designed for exactly that, so nothing falls through the cracks between April and November.
There are some extras that suit people who travel. Each membership includes an annual concierge physical, plus a yearly IV infusion and facial. If you are heading abroad between seasons, your doctor can prepare a personal travel kit for the trip. And if you ever need hospital care while you are here, direct admission to Delray Medical Center is arranged when possible, skipping the ER, with your doctor staying involved.
Have a doctor here before you need one
Visit our Boynton Beach office at 8190 Jog Rd, Suite 103, and see how a concierge doctor fits your winters in Florida. New patients are welcome Monday to Friday, 9 to 6, by appointment.
The bottom line
Snowbird season should be about the beach, the golf course and time with family, not hunting for a clinic when you feel unwell. Having your own doctor in Palm Beach County means the months you spend here are covered just as well as the months you spend at home.
